Alcohols Q 0230Enantioselective Synthesis of 1-Alkyl-Substituted 1-Phenyl-1,2-ethanediols Using a Myrtenal-Derived Chiral Auxiliary. -An efficient enantioselective synthesis of title phenylethanediols is presented, involving a myrtenal-derived chiral auxiliary in the nucleophilic addition of Grignard reagents or organolithiums (IV) towards an optically pure benzoyloxathiane (III). Most of the addition reactions proceed with excellent diastereoselectivity. Hydrolytic cleavage of the O,S-acetals (V) followed by reduction of the evolving phenylacetaldehyde then affords the optically active 1,2-diols (VI), (VII) in excellent stereoselectivity. Additionally, optimum conditions are identified for the highly diastereoselective reduction of benzoyloxathiane (III). -(VARGAS-DIAZ, M. Imidazole derivatives R 0190Parallel and Automated Library Synthesis of 2-Long Alkyl Chain Benzoazoles and Azole[4,5-b]pyridines under Microwave Irradiation. -A 40-membered library of pharmacologically interesting anellated imidazoles and oxazoles (III), (V) and (VII) is prepared. In addition, derivatives with long alkyl chains may be useful as corrosion inhibitors for oil field applications. -(MARTINEZ-PALOU*, R.; ZEPEDA, L. G.; HOEPFL, H.; MONTOYA, A.; GUZMAN-LUCERO, D.
