Findings suggest overall good long-term performance with IUD insertion, with minimal complaints or adverse outcomes. These findings may help to support providers serving similar populations in promoting this method.
Purpose To compare the results obtained between Humphrey Perimeter (Carl Zeiss Meditec, EEUU) and Heidelberg Edge Perimeter (HEP, Heidelberg Engineering, Alemania) tested in a group of glaucomatous patients.
Methods A total of 23 eyes of 23 glaucomatous patients were prospectively and consecutively selected. All of them had basal IOP values higher than 20 mmHg and glaucomatous optic nerve head. They were examined with Standard Automated Perimetry (SAP) using 24‐2 SITA standard and HEP perimetry using 24‐2 ASTA standard algorithm. They performed at least one reliable perimetry with each device. Spearman‘s correlation coefficients were calculated between global indices of both devices: mean deviation (MD), pattern standard deviation (PSD) and visual field index (VFI).
Results Mean age was of 65.07±8.67 years. Subjects had mean IOP values of 24.43±1.90 mmHg. The mean MD values were ‐6.73±6.23 and ‐2.89±3.26 measured with Humphrey and HEP perimeters respectively. And the mean PSD values were 6.07±3.62 and 3.80±2.45 measured with Humphrey and HEP perimeters respectively. The strongest correlations were observed between MDs (0.683; p=0.001) and between PSDs (0.619; p=0.003).
Conclusion Humphrey and HEP perimeter correlated well in some global values. Further studies are required to evaluate the clinical usefulness of HEP perimeter in glaucoma patients.
Purpose to compare Cirrus Fourier‐domain optical coherence tomograph (OCT) with Stratus Time‐domain OCT for acquiring retinal images and measuring retinal thickness.
Methods Eighty five eyes from 85 healthy subjects, 26 men (30.6%) and 59 women (69.4%), aged 16 to 72 years were prospective and consecutively selected. All of them underwent three macular 512x128 volume cube scans with the Cirrus HD‐OCT system (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc.). The average of these three scans was calculated. With the Stratus OCT system (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc.) a fast macular scan was recorded. The nine areas corresponding to the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) macular protocol were compared between both devices. The reproducibility of macular thickness measurements using de Cirrus HD‐OCT was studied, and the variation coefficient (COV) of each parameter was assessed.
Results Cirrus HD‐OCT macular thickness measurements were approximately 64.22 µm higher than those from Stratus OCT (266.40 µm vs 202.18 µm). The measurements in all nine ETDRS areas were statistically higher using the Cirrus HD‐OCT. Nasal inner area showed the highest value. Retinal thickness measurements using the 512x128 macular cube scan were highly reproducible for the nine ETDRS areas. Mean COV was 1.45 ± 1.11% (ranged from 0.98% to 2.49%). The lowest COV was found for the temporal inner ETDRS area (COV=0.98%) and the highest for the central ETDRS area (COV=2.49%).
Conclusion Macular measurements using Cirrus HD‐OCT are clearly higher than those obtained by Stratus OCT.
Purpose To study the efficacy of non‐surgical treatment in patients with nodular basal cell carcinoma (BCC) placed around the eyes that have been treated with imiquimod 5% (IMQ) on the skin versus those that have received photodynamic therapy (PDT). To analyze clinical development, pathological remissions, aesthetic results and tolerance to the treatment .
Methods Five patients with clinical and pathological diagnostic as nodular BCC were divided into two groups for therapeutic intervention: three of them received treatment with IMQ and the other two patients were treated with PTD after the application on the skin of metilaminolevulinate (MAL), a photosensitiser substance.
Results The tolerance to the treatment was better in the group treated with PTD. Clinical and pathological remissions were obtained in treated patients. One of them, who received PTD, presented residual tumour at the end of the treatment, but the biopsy showed granuloma without histologically BCC component.
Conclusion The effectiveness of BCC treated with IMQ 5% on the skin (five times a week for six weeks) is similar to the effectiveness of surgical treatment. Non‐ invasive treatment is better tolerated than surgical treatment in this kind of tumour. Moreover, the aesthetic and functional results are better than the surgical ones.
