The microwave radiometer on board ERS-I developed at CRPE has two channels at 23·8 and 36·5GHz. It is a nadir pointing sensor, aimed at the correction of the altimeter tropospheric path delay. It also provides the precipitable water and cloud liquid water over oceans along the satellite track. However, the measured brightness temperatures can be used to characterize polar ice and land surface properties. This paper summarises the characteristics of the instrument, describes the scientific requirements for data processing and presents its first results after launch.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
