The studies carried out during the last two decades on the sodium-sulfur electrochemical system showed that the ceramics based on sodium-containing beta-alumina are most suitable for producing the cell separators and the solid electrolytes of the storage batteries owing to the exceptionally high conductivity with respect to the sodium ions [i]. In such elements, the solid electrolyte is usually used in the form of long thin-walled ceramic tubes. The material of the solid electrolyte must be absolutely resistant to the aggressive environment at high temperatures and must possess sufficiently high strength characteristics. It was established that the density, the microstructure, the chemical composition, and the phase constitution of the ceramic electrolyte have a significant effect on its ionic conductivity, mechanical properties, and efficiency.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
