The most productive mines are Trepča (Stari Trg), Crnac, Belo Brdo, Kišnica, Avajlija, and Novo Brdo with total past production of 60.5 million metric tons (Mt) of ore at 8% Pb + Zn and more than 4,500 t of Ag. Their formation is related to Tertiary postcollisional magmatism in the western Vardar zone (Cvetković et al., 2004; Borojević Šoštarić et al., 2011). Mining in the area began during the Middle Ages, while industrial production started with the formation of Trepča Mines Limited in 1927. Production was maintained during the Second World War, and then continued until 1999 under state ownership. Between 2000 and 2008 the Trepcˇa deposit was administered by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK). The deposit exploitation started again in 2008
