In this paper the objective and subjective measures (objective and subjective indicators) of the concept of quality of life research have been discussed. Since the measures are specific, the most part of the paper discusses separately their development and their methodological specifics. At the end of the paper the value of their joint use in the research has been emphasised. Both kinds of measures have their advantages and disadvantages, but in conceptual sense they are complementary. The quality of life is a complicated and multileveled construct which requires complex research approaches. Research has proved that parallel use of both kinds of indicators significantly improves comprehension of the quality of life of inhabitants of a certain geographical area.
This paper represents a study of the quality of life in the City of Rijeka. The main research aim was to analyse whether significant differences exist in mean satisfaction with neighbourhood among different groups of respondents according to selected variables. Overall neighbourhood satisfaction was used as an indicator of the quality of neighbourhood life. The main research method was a questionnaire survey conducted on a random sample of 365 households, chosen from five city neighbourhoods. Statistical procedures used were t-test and one-way analysis of variance. The conducted analysis showed that respondents in analysed neighbourhoods of Rijeka do not differ significantly in neighbourhood satisfaction regarding: gender, age, educational attainment, monthly household income, perceived property value, housing type and length of residence. On the other hand, significant difference in neighbourhood satisfaction was found regarding respondents' tenure. Furthermore, it has been shown that a positive feeling towards place and community is linked with higher levels of neighbourhood satisfaction. Respondents who meet their neighbours more often to discuss common neighbourhood issues were also more satisfied with their neighbourhoods.
The period of economic transition has resulted in complex social, functional and morphological transformations which have left their mark in the urban structure of Zagreb. At the beginning of 2000' fundamental planning acts have been passed - Zagreb spatial plan and the City Master Plan - to serve as concrete strategies and guidelines in developing the city area. However, none of the regulatory rules and acts have been completely successful in managing the city development. Significant changes and problems the city is facing in the post-socialist era serve as a research framework and are discussed in this paper. The main goal is to register and explain crucial causes of these spatial transformations. Based on the research of cartographic sources and conducted fieldwork four representative types of problem areas of the city are recognized. According to their functional and morphological characteristics, they are: converted urban land areas, derelict areas, newly built areas and densified areas. Each of these four types of problem areas is individually analyzed in the context of possible negative consequences on the urban environment
Ključne riječi: vodni resursi, vodoopskrba, održivi razvoj, turizam, otok Krk Water Supply as a Factor of Sustainable Tourism Development on the Island of KrkThis article deals with the characteristics of water supply as one of the elements of sustainable tourism development on the Island of Krk. The Island of Krk, being an important tourist and second home area, as well as Croatia's most populated island, shows significant needs for water resources. During the summer, there is huge pressure on the water supply system and the environment in general. Does the island have enough water resources to meet such a demand? Owing to the abundant island wells and thanks to the connection of the northern part of the island to mainland Rijeka's water supply system in mid-2008, current water demands are being satisfied. Therefore, we can say that, although the drainage problem still has not been solved, sustainable tourism development of the island is not being impeded for the time being by the lack of water resources. However, water supply is not the only parameter of sustainable tourism development in a particular area. It is necessary also to take into account other indicators that influence the quality of life of the local population, as well as those of periodical space consumers.
