This is the first documented case in which changes in the size and location of the cortical map were associated with an intervention and improvement in function in an individual with tetraplegia. This case suggests that an intensive training intervention may induce both functional and neurophysiological changes.
When combined with SS, both unimanual and bimanual MP training improve hand function and sensation in individuals with tetraplegia. Changes in hand function seem to be associated with increased corticomotor map area.
Hand training combined with either SS or FES was associated with improved hand use and corticomotor activity in persons with chronic tetraplegia. Both interventions appear to be equally effective.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
