Our results are consistent with some, although not all, previous reports. Prospective studies are needed to determine the temporal relationship between observed alterations in lipid and antioxidant concentrations in preeclamptic pregnancies.
This article outlines the composition by sex of political scientists in the UK. The data show that there are fewer women working in the profession than men and that there is a ‘seniority sex gap’. The data are then broken down in terms of university membership groupings and individual departments in order to produce snapshot rankings. These rankings are then combined to produce an overall ranking of female presence within UK political science departments. Our findings suggest that a ‘leaking pipeline’ persists and that numerical and seniority inequality will continue for a considerable time unless further action is taken.
Processes of politicisation and depoliticisation have become the empirical and theoretical focus for a growing body of political studies. However, the disparate literatures on these processes conceptualise and explore them in quite different ways. This article seeks to make some inroads into these debates by re‐evaluating the concept of (de)politicisation and considering how academics can themselves participate in such processes. It suggests that (Foucauldian) genealogical critique offers a particularly fruitful analytically informed strategy for politicisation. Drawing on the work of David Owen, it is suggested that genealogical strategies help to address a depoliticising condition of aspectival captivity and extend human capacities for autonomy, without intensifying states of domination.
The teaching and learning of ontology and epistemology is an important element of political science, as it helps students to appraise, differentiate and choose between competing philosophies, theories and analytical traditions. Thus, it encourages reflexive learning through the strategies of inquiry, role taking and benign disruption. However, we argue that there are aspects within the most prominent introductory material on these meta‐theoretical issues which may undermine these processes. In particular, definitional inaccuracies and a lack of sustained reflection on the contested nature of the directional relationship between ontology and epistemology tend towards a prescriptive ‘path dependency’ and curtail the possibility of reflexive learning. By subjecting this received knowledge to critical reflection, we hope to overturn these weaknesses and open up a debate on the teaching and learning of ontology and epistemology.
