This paper pays tribute to Roger Layton's contributions to Higher Degree Research Education as a thesis examiner. Contributions are highlighted via consideration of these perspectives – in particular their similarities with respect the depth of the insights that are provided are noted as is their usefulness in facilitating further (post doctoral) research; this despite their quite different topics and feedback.
