The relationship between elation-depression and desire for excitement may be approached from two general perspectives. From an intraindividud pomt of view we may consider elationdepression as a mood and examme the extent to which mdividuals desire excitement when they are elated and when they are depressed. From an mtenndividual onentation we may view elationdepression as a personahty trait and determme whether mdividuals differ in their typical levels of desire for excitement dependmg upon their characteristic levels of happmess In this study hypotheses will be considered on both mtra-and mtermdividual levels.
Intraindividual Patterns of Covariation between ElatUmrDepression and Desire for ExcitementAlthough the psychodynamics of extreme moods have been studied extensively, there has been httle systematic mvestigation of die linkages between specific normal moods and specific cognitions and behaviors In this study the intraindividual relations between elation and depression on the one hand and desire for excitement on the other wdl be considered as a first step in the development of such linkages The basic notion here is that when individuals are elated they feel hke domg relatively excitmg thmgs and that when they are depressed they feel like domg relatively imexcitmg thmgsThe rationale for this hypothesis is based upon psychological concomitants of elation and depression The studies m this area
