BackgroundSeveral common aspects of endothelial phenotype, such as the expression of cell adhesion molecules, are shared between metastasis and inflammation. Here, we analyzed VCAM-1 variants as biological markers of these two types of endothelial cell activation. With the combination of 2-DE and western blot techniques and the aid of tunicamycin, we analyzed N-glycosylation variants of VCAM-1 in primary human endothelial cells stimulated with either TNF or tumoral soluble factors (TSF's) derived from the human breast cancer cell line ZR75.30.ResultsTreatments induced a pro-adhesive endothelial phenotype. 2D western blots analysis of cells subjected to both treatments revealed the expression of the two known VCAM-1 isoforms and of previously unknown isoforms. In particular TSFZR75.30 induced an isoform with a relative molecular mass (Mr) and isoelectric point (pI) of 75-77 kDa and 5.0, respectively.ConclusionThe unknown isoforms of VCAM-1 that were found to be overexpressed after treatment with TSF's compared with TNF, could serve as biomarkers to discriminate between inflammation and metastasis. 2D western blots revealed three new VCAM-1 isoforms expressed in primary human endothelial cells in response to TSF stimulation. Each of these isoforms varies in Mr and pI and could be the result of differential glycosylation states.
La cienciometría o bibliometría consiste en el análisis cuantitativo de la producción científica (en especial los artículos científicos), para investigar el desarrollo, estructura, dinámica, tendencias y relaciones de la práctica científica. Su desarrollo es uno de los efectos de la revolución digital en la ciencia, su uso en la medicina ha aumentado y las aplicaciones bibliométricas en el área médica pueden clasificarse en cinco categorías: recuperación de literatura, obtención de nuevo conocimiento, revisiones bibliográficas, análisis de las ciencias médicas, evaluación, gestión y política para medicina, se dan ejemplos de cada una. Los millones de datos médicos que se generan a partir de la literatura, los miles de colecciones bibliográficas que existen y los cientos de aplicaciones que hay en la actualidad para procesar y analizar la literatura, indican la importancia de preparar especialistas en México de alto nivel, capaces de dominar el procesamiento de literatura electrónica por métodos de innovadores y de vanguardia como la cienciometría. El primer paso para lograr este objetivo consistirá en enseñar a los médicos en formación las características, ventajas y perspectivas de este método.
Remote monitoring of health can reduce frequent hospitalisations, diminishing the burden on the healthcare system and cost to the community. Patient monitoring helps identify symptoms associated with diseases or disease-driven disorders, which makes it an essential element of medical diagnoses, clinical interventions, and rehabilitation treatments for severe medical conditions. This monitoring can be expensive and time-consuming and provide an incomplete picture of the state of the patient. In the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the adoption of mobile and wearable devices, along with the introduction of smart textile solutions that offer the possibility of continuous monitoring. These alternatives fuel a technology shift in healthcare, one that involves the continuous tracking and monitoring of individuals. This scoping review examines how mobile, wearable, and textile sensing technology have been permeating healthcare by offering alternate solutions to challenging issues, such as personalised prescriptions or home-based secondary prevention. To do so, we have selected 222 healthcare literature articles published from 2007 to 2019 and reviewed them following the PRISMA process under the schema of a scoping review framework. Overall, our findings show a recent increase in research on mobile sensing technology to address patient monitoring, reflected by 128 articles published in journals and 19 articles in conference proceedings between 2014 and 2019, which represents 57.65% and 8.55% respectively of all included articles.
