Hormonal and vascular changes of pregnancy may exacerbate spinal hemangiomas. Depending on the location, these may lead to profound neurologic disability and management depends on the degree of myelopathy. Surgical intervention may be necessary to avoid neurologic injury, but amelioration after delivery is possible.
INTRODUCTION: To optimize patient safety and enhance residency education, it is common for interns to receive simulationbased orientation prior to working in the clinical setting. The three Arizona OB/GYN residencies (University of Arizona-Phoenix, University of Arizona-Tucson, and Phoenix Integrated Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology) developed a pilot program to pool financial, material, and personnel resources by holding a combined skills workshop for incoming interns, while setting groundwork for future collaboration. Learners were introduced to several practical skills related to obstetrical and gynecologic procedures. Additionally, an ACOG District Officer provided a session introducing residents to junior fellowship and resident resources available through ACOG.
METHODS:A survey-based needs assessment was used. Participants completed pre-and post-session surveys of comfort and confidence in each skill area and objective assessment of their knowledge base. Questions also evaluated participants' interest in collaborating with individuals from other institutions and their familiarity with ACOG. We then held a three-hour session including obstetrical simulations, surgical skills, and safe handoffs and transitions of care.
