Abstract. The infrastructure essentialities for accurate time and stable frequency distribution are presented. Our solution is based on sharing fibers for a research and educational network carrying live data traffic with time and frequency transfer in parallel. Accurate time and stable frequency transmission uses mainly dark channels amplified by dedicated bidirectional amplifiers with the same propagation path for both directions of transmission. This paper targets challenges related to bidirectional transmission, particularly, directional nonreciprocities. © The Authors. Challenging experiments for tests in fundamental physics require highly coherent optical frequency references with suppressed phase noise from hundreds of kHz down to μHz of Fourier frequencies. It can be achieved by remote synchronization of many frequency references interconnected by stabilized optical fibre links. Here we describe the path to realize a delocalized optical frequency reference for spectroscopy of the isomeric state of the nucleus of Thorium-229 atom. This is a prerequisite for the realization of the next generation of an optical clock – the nuclear clock. We present the established 235 km long phase-coherent stabilized cross-border fibre link connecting two delocalized metrology laboratories in Brno and Vienna operating highly-coherent lasers disciplined by active Hydrogen masers through optical frequency combs. A significant part (up to tens of km) of the optical fibre is passing urban combined collectors with a non-negligible level of acoustic interference and temperature changes, which results in a power spectral density of phase noise over 105 rad2· Hz-1. Therefore, we deploy a digital signal processing technique to suppress the fibre phase noise over a wide dynamic range of phase fluctuations. To demonstrate the functionality of the link, we measured the phase noise power spectral density of a remote beat note between two independent lasers, locked to high-finesse stable resonators. Using optical frequency combs at both ends of the link, a long-term fractional frequency stability in the order of 10−15 between local active Hydrogen masers was measured as well. Thanks to this technique, we have achieved reliable operation of the phase-coherent fibre link with fractional stability of 7 × 10−18 in 103 s.
In this work we present a design of an external optical cavity based on Fabry-Perot etalons applied to a 100 MHz Er-doped fiber optical frequency comb working at 1560 nm to increase its repetition frequency. A Fabry-Perot cavity is constructed based on a transportable cage system with two silver mirrors in plano-concave geometry including the mode-matching lenses, fiber coupled collimation package and detection unit. The system enables full 3D angle mirror tilting and x-y off axis movement as well as distance between the mirrors. We demonstrate the increase of repetition frequency by direct measurement of the beat frequency and spectrally by using the virtually imaged phased array images. Published by AIP Publishing. Dynamic development of long-distance methods of time and frequency signals transmission over optical fibers is giving the opportunity to create optical network with dedicated clock services. In order to prepare the deployment of this technology for a sustainable, pan-European fibre network, providing high-performance clock services to European research 978-1-5386-8305-7/19/$31.00 ©2019 IEEEinfrastructures and supporting wider services to industry and society, the CLONETS project, funded by the European Commission in H2020 program, is a coordination and support action intended to accelerate the transfer of these technologies to industry and to strengthen the coordination between research infrastructures and research and education network providers.. The optical network will cover a European area, and will be providing highest available performance for research infrastructures, commercial entities and other organisations.
Long-distance time and frequency transfer methods based on optical fibre links have evolved rapidly in recent years, demonstrating excellent performance for frequency transfer and considerable promise for accurate time transfer. CLONETS-DS is a European Union-funded research and innovation action intended to facilitate the vision of a sustainable, pan-European optical fibre network for precise time and frequency reference dissemination.
