The pioneers used familiar modes of fencing in order to help establish effective settlement in Nebraska and Kansas. Ordinarily they started with zigzag rail fence, but soon resorted to substitutes as timber ran short. Hedges, especially of Osage orange, became unusually important in eastern Kansas and southeastern Nebraska.
