Mini-grids are considered to play a critical role in achieving universal electrification. Yet, the sector faces many challenges. This study aims to analyze the technological innovation of nascent privately owned solar mini-grids operating in rural areas in Rwanda. A Technological Innovation System framework will be used to assess the development of this niche technology. A number of mini-grid developers have been involved in the analysis to support literature findings. Through this study, we evaluate the performance of the technology, identify barriers, and propose measures to allow transition from proof of concept to scale.
