The causes and patterns of open globe injuries differ between men and women. In this series, the majority of injuries to men were caused by projectile objects related to work or home improvement projects. Open globe injuries in women were most often resulted from fall, and were more likely to cause rupture posterior to the limbus.
Patients with 2 mm and less of measurable enophthalmos had a normal appearance as frequently as those without enophthalmos. Nearly all patients with measurements of 5 mm and greater had abnormal appearances. The point at which enophthalmos becomes detectable lies between 3 mm and 4 mm.
