The aim ofthis project was to determine thefeasibility of developing sensory stimulation products for the Alzheimer's-type dementia patients exhibiting "null" behavior in order to increase their quality of care and quality of life. The research subjects were selectedfrom a population of49 residents living on a special dementia unit in a 228-bed nursing home. This population represented a cross section of the local community, inclusive ofwomen and minorities. Sensory satisfying objects were determined through structured observations ofpatients in the institutionalized setting to meet criteria ofsafety and effectiveness for patient use and caregiver implementation. The results clearly show the feasibility of developing such productsfor use in nursing homes, adult day carefacilities, Alzheimer s carefacilities andprivate homes.
