A simple and practical technique for directly transforming readily available alkyl alcohols into halides using economical sulfuryl fluoride (SO2F2) has been developed. This halogenation protocol is extended to a wide range of alkyl alcohols to provide the corresponding chlorides, bromides, iodides, and fluorides in excellent yields (over 90 % in most cases) with broad functional group compatibility.
