Pediatric patients with SCD and a history of a mental health diagnosis have longer LOS and higher admission rates for management of VOE. Ultimately, these findings suggest that mental health pose a challenge to the management of sickle cell pain.
This study demonstrated that (a) a camp can provide a beneficial social outlet with peers with SCD, (b) children/adolescents with SCD are able to manage their complex symptoms at a young age, and (c) photovoice is a useful methodology for children/adolescents with SCD and potentially other chronic illnesses.
