An unbalanced pigment distribution among the sepal and petal segments results in various colour patterns of orchid flowers. Here, we explored this type of mechanism of colour pattern formation in flowers of the Cattleya hybrid 'KOVA'. Our study showed that pigment accumulation displayed obvious spatiotemporal specificity in the flowers and was likely regulated by three R2R3-MYB transcription factors. Before flowering, RcPAP1 was specifically expressed in the epichile to activate the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway, which caused substantial cyanin accumulation and resulted in a purple-red colour. After flowering, the expression of RcPAP2 resulted in a low level of cyanin accumulation in the perianths and a pale pink colour, whereas RcPCP1 was expressed only in the hypochile, where it promoted α-carotene and lutein accumulation and resulted in a yellow colour. Additionally, we propose that the spatiotemporal expression of different combinations of AP3and AGL6-like genes might participate in KOVA flower colour pattern formation.

The subtribe Aeridinae, which contains approximately 90 genera, is one of the most diverse and taxonomically puzzling groups in Orchidaceae. In the present study, the phylogenetic relationships of Aeridinae were reconstructed utilizing five DNA sequences (ITS, atpI-H, matK, psbA-trnH, and trnL-F) from 211 taxa in 74 genera. The results of the phylogenetic analyses indicate that Aeridinae is monophyletic and that the subtribe can primarily be grouped into 10 clades: (1) Saccolabium clade, (2) Chiloschista clade, (3) Phalaenopsis clade, (4) Thrixspermum clade, (5) Vanda clade, (6) Aerides clade, (7) Trichoglottis clade, (8) Abdominea clade, (9) Gastrochilus clade, and (10) Cleisostoma clade. In our examination, most genera of Aeridinae were well-supported as monophyletic, and several genera, namely, Pteroceras, Cleisostoma, Vandopsis, Diploprora, Malleola, and Robiquetia, were found to be polyphyletic as currently circumscribed. In addition, several classifications of intra-genera, such as the subgenus Codonosepalum of Taeniophyllum and the section Gastrochilus of Gastrochilus, were also revealed to be paraphyletic. Due to the many questions raised by our phylogenies, the present study may serve as a reference for future taxonomic studies of Aeridinae.

A preliminary phylogeny of Fordiophyton (Melastomataceae) and the description of two new taxa, F. chenii and F. huizhouense, from southern China, are presented here. The phylogenetic analyses indicate that Fordiophyton is monophyletic and the two new species are in this clade of Sonerileae. Fordiophyton chenii is morphologically similar to F. cordifolium. Both taxa have glabrous stems, large, cordate leaves and four-sided petioles, but F. chenii has a very short stem, rosette leaves, hypanthia with dense glandular trichomes, and the shorter stamens with yellow anthers. Fordiophyton huizhouense shares with F. peperomiifolium the short, densely hirsute stem and rosette leaves, but F. huizhouense is characterized by adaxially smooth leaves, lanceolate calyx lobes, and inflated, prolonged connective bases in the longer stamens.
