FIVE TEXT FIGURES AND mvo PLATES (SEVEN FIGURES)The manner in which the v,arious parts of the suprarenal glands receive their innervation is of importance in throwing light on their functional activity. Yet the exact distribution of the nerve fibers which supply the glands does not seem to be generally known.I n earlier times attention was focused chiefly on the prescncc of ganglion cells in the mledulla. Eckw (1) , Virchow (2) , Holm( 3 ) , von Brunn( 4) , Braun( 5) , Alitsukuri( 6) , Gottschau (7), Dostoiewsky(8), Fusari(S), Dogiel(lO), and Heriner(l1) described these ganglion cells as being separate aiid distinct from the medullary parenchyma, while Leydig( 12) , RIayer (13), Stannius (14), and Elliott (15) did not differentiate between ganglion cells and medullary cells, but considered the medulla as an essentially nervous organ acting as a nerve center. On the nerve fibers in the glands relatively little work has becn done. Nagel(l6) was the first t o describe their distribution, being followed milch later by Fusari( 9 ) , Dogiel (10) , and Hirt (17). Fusari emphasized the abundance of nerve fibers in the cortex as well as in the medulla. Dogiel dcscribed the networks of fibers surrounding the groups of cortical and medullary cells and, in the case of the latter, penetrating between the cells. He also described the termination of nerve fibrils within ganglion cells. lFroin a thesis presented t o the faculty of the Pale University School of Medicine in partial fulfillinelit of tlir re~lnirenients f o r the degree of Doctor qf hfedicinc. 2.1 l'llh A X 4 l 0 M I C A T 2 RECORD, TOL. 50, NO. 3 SEPTC1\IBEE, 1931
Excision of the splanchnic nerves and the lower 4 dorsal sympathetic ganglia has been shown by Goldblatt, Gross and Elanzal' to have no effect on experimental renal hypertension. Grimson' has found that in normal dogs total sympathectomy produces a temporary fall in blood pressure. The effect of total sympathectomy on experimental renal hyper-* This work wag aided by a grant from the Douglas Smith Foundation.
