This chapter discusses a class of determiner phrases with one or more of the following properties: (i) they have a restricted distribution; (ii) in combination with (some) modals, they convey, roughly, that all the individuals in their domain are possibilities (a “free choice effect”); and (iii) they can express modality in the absence of an overt modal. The chapter has two main parts: the first deals with free choice items , like English free choice any , Spanish cualquiera , or Italian qualsiasi , which have properties (i) and (ii); the second surveys modal indefinites , existential items with property (iii), like German irgendein , Spanish algún , or Italian un qualche .
