The evaluation of PV-Wind hybrid systems under real field conditions is essential to predict their actual capacity to convert the energy available in the solar radiation and wind resources into electrical power. Therefore, detailed studies of these resources play a crucial role to estimate whether electricity can be generated at a reasonable cost for a specific region. The work presented in this paper shows the results of a study of Solar and Wind resources with the purpose of being applied in conjunction for reliable hybrid PV-Wind generators in the Yucatan Peninsula region. The study was undertaken at the Energy Laboratory of the Autonomous University of Yucatan located close to the north coast. Diurnal and seasonal variations were computed for each resource.
A PV-Wind hybrid system has been developed at the energy Laboratory of the Autonomous university of Yucatan in order to evaluate the performance of this kind of generators in the tropical conditions of the North of the Yucatan Peninsula. The systems comprise a PV array, a wind generator, a battery bank and a set of electric regulators, converters and an inverter. The voltage and the electric current of the main components of the system have been studied monthly along with their corresponding diurnal cycles. This paper presents an outline of the PVWind hybrid energy generator and its main characteristics which will allow to evaluate strategies to improve the performance of independent energy generation systems from renewable resources in the study region.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
