Derbendikhan reservoir is located on the south east of Sulaimani province between longitude 35° 6' 35"N and latitude, 45° 41' 20" E, and it is the second largest reservoir in the Iraqi Kurdistan region at an altitude of about 485 m above sea level. The study was conducted in Mosul during the period from September 2010 to March 2011 including two groups: the first non-pregnant women and the second pregnant women composed of 40 and 120 apparently healthy women respectively. Pregnant group was subdivided equally according to their trimester into three subgroups, women in second and third trimester having ferrous sulphate supplement. Serum magnesium and copper measurements were done for these groups of women. The results showed that serum magnesium concentration start to reduce significantly during first trimester continue to decline in second and third trimesters in comparison with nonpregnant group. Serum copper concentration start to increase significantly during first trimester continue to increase in second and third trimesters in comparison with nonpregnant group.
Two proteinous compounds (I and II) had been isolated by gel filtration chromatography of the full saturated precipitate produced by ammonium sulphate of the aqueous extract of the tubers. The apparent molecular weights of the isolated components(I and II) were in the rang of (63096, 5012) dalton using gel filtration technique and in the range of (61000, 5000) dalton using sodium dodecyl sulphatepolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis technique.The results showed that the aqueous extract and the low molecular weight proteinous compound (II) were lowered glucose level using a dose of 75 mg/kg body weight and the percent decrease were 45% and 47% respectively in normal mice. Where as in diabetic mice, the low molecular weight proteinous compound (II) was the most effective in lowering glucose level using both doses (75 and 125 mg/kg body weight) and the percent decrease were 64% and 69% respectively.Finally, the aqueous extract and the proteinous compound I (125 mg/kg body weight) were the most effective in lowering cholesterol level in normal mice. Where as in diabetic mice, the aqueous extract and the proteinous compound I in both doses (125 and 75 mg/kg body weight) were the most effective in lowering cholesterol level.

Pregnant group were subdivided equally according to their trimester into three subgroups, women in second and third trimester are having ferrous sulphate in their ingestion. Serum zinc measurements were done for these groups of women.the results showed that serum zinc concentration start to reduce significantly during second trimester continue to decline in third trimester in comparison with non-married group. Therefore, it is recommended to measure serum zinc during pregnancy with the use of optimal dose of zinc supplemental therapy.
