A novel nano-sized bismuth oxide bioglass doped iron oxide were synthesized through a sol-gel technique showed in graphical abstract. Bioactivity was investigated by in-vitro synthesis involving immersion of the samples in simulated body fluid (SBF) for different time intervals. XRD, FTIR, Fe57 Mössbauer spectroscopy, SEM, EDX and DLS were used to characterization of prepared bioglass. Results showed that Fe ions migrated into the glass matrix much faster than Si ions moved into the samples with iron content, especially with higher iron content. The experiment of co-culturing cells with BG showed that osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells could attach well to the surface of BG, especially which contain iron content. Prepared material has the potential may be suitable for serving as a material to improve osteogenesis or thermoseeds targeted drug delivery of Fe-bioglass implants.
