By paper chromatography in various systems, we have established the presence in the leaves of Hedera colchica C. Koch (Colchis ivy) of four substances of flavonoid nature. For their isolation, the raw material was extracted with methanol, the extract was evaporated, the residue was dissolved in water, and the solution was purified with chloroform. The aqueous liquid so purified was concentrated and treated with acetone. The acetone solution yielded a yellow substance with the composition C27H30016 (yield 0.6%), mp 181-184 ° C, [(~]~-17 .° (c 1.0; ethanol-dimethylformamide (99.7 : 0.3)), which, on the basis of bathochromy, its hydrolysis products, and a mixed melting point, was identified as rutin. This is the first time that rutin has been isolated from the genus Hedera.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
