In December 2018, the Danish Meteorological Institute organised an international meeting on the subject of crowdsourced data in numerical weather prediction (NWP) and weather forecasting. The meeting, spanning 2 days, gathered experts on crowdsourced data from both meteorological institutes and universities from Europe and the United States. Scientific presentations highlighted a vast array of possibilities and progress being made globally. Subjects include data from vehicles, smartphones, and private weather stations. Two groups were created to discuss open questions regarding the collection and use of crowdsourced data from different observing platforms. Common challenges were identified and potential solutions were discussed. While most of the work presented was preliminary, the results shared suggested that crowdsourced observations have the potential to enhance NWP. A common platform for sharing expertise, data, and results would help crowdsourced data realise this potential.
The field and current induced magnetization reversal of a Co-Fe-B layer in a perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction (pMTJs) has been studied at room temperature. The magnetization switching probability from the parallel (P) state to the antiparallel (AP) state and from AP to P is found to be asymmetric. We observe that this asymmetry depends on the magnetic configuration of the synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF). The state diagram and the energy landscape are compared for two SAF configurations. We conclude that the asymmetry is due to the inhomogeneity of the fringe field generated by the SAF. Our study highlights the role of reference-layer fringe field on the free-layer's energy barrier height which has to be carefully control for memory application.
Magnetic aftereffect measurements on a synthetic antiferromagnet with strong perpendicular anisotropy are presented. Two types of magnetic transitions are observed in the CoFeB/Ta/CoFeB bilayer where the two ferromagnetic CoFeB layers are antiferromagnetically coupled: the transition from a parallel to an antiparallel CoFeB layers magnetization alignment and the transition between two possible antiparallel magnetization states. Magnetic relaxation measurements show a complete reversal in the case of the transition between the two antiferromagnetic configurations. The experimental data can be well fitted in the frame of extended exponential relaxation using the Fatuzzo-Labrune model. Consequently, the domain nucleation and domain-wall propagation can be studied as a function of temperature and applied field.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
