Serologic assays using crude antigens for the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV)-seropositive patients have been shown to lack sensitivity and specificity, particularly in AIDS patients. Antibodies to a cloned antigen, recombinant (r) K39, of Leishmania chagasi are specific for members of the Leishmania donovani complex and have been shown to indicate active disease in immunocompetent persons. This study demonstrated that antibodies to rK39 were also detectable in HIV-seropositive patients coinfected with Leishmania infantum. Furthermore, the rK39 ELISA was more sensitive than an IFA for detecting L. infantum infections in patients with AIDS. In addition, antibody titers to rK39 in HIV-negative patients infected with L. infantum or L. chagasi declined during treatment with meglumine antimoniate or liposomal amphotericin B. In contrast, most patients who clinically relapsed showed increased antibody titers to rK39. These data demonstrate the diagnostic and prognostic utility of rK39 in detecting active visceral leishmaniasis.
Earlier studies highlight the correlations between personality traits and opennes, extroversion and practicing sport. The study is focused to investigate the possible relationships between the level of Well-being, self-esteem, life satisfaction, openness and sport practicing at students at psychology. The participants were a number of 75 students at psychology. Instruments: Ryff Well-being scale, Self-esteem scale (Rosenberg), life satisfaction scale and Big five markers IPIP. Findings: the findings highlighted the correlations between the five personality dimensions and life satisfaction, self-esteem and partially with the dimensions of the Well-being scale.
Primitive retroperitoneal tumors are formations with varying degrees of severity. They may occur locally, being impressive due to their generous diameters, but they can also invade the entire body. The latest genetic studies have somewhat changed the vision about the etiology of soft tissue tumors, while the immunohistochemical studies offer customized results on recurrence, metastasis and survival rate. At the same time, the importance of the imaging findings is crucial, especially when the localization poses problems regarding the surgical technique and a means of adjuvant therapy must be chosen accordingly. The peculiarity of this case is that we managed to resect the impressively large retroperitoneal malignant tumor with oncological safety margins. We present the case of a patient admitted in 2012 in the Department of General Surgery II of the "Carol Davila" Central Military Emergency Hospital, because of the development of a bulky formation in the right hemiabdomen and subocclusive symptoms. A thorough investigation was performed. The initial suspicion was of a primitive retroperitoneal tumor, the CT aspect indicating a liposarcoma. The total tumoral excision was decided and performed, with the previous checking of the specific areas of metastases. The diagnosis certitude was obtained after sending the 5.5 kg piece to the anatomical pathology examination. Post-operatively, the patient was referred to the oncological service for appropriate adjuvant treatment. So far, the surgical treatment combined with the oncological one has had favorable results.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
