Science learning outcomes such as science process skills and attitudes toward science are still important issues in science education. In this study the researchers tried to get a picture of the students' learning outcomes to get input on the learning process of science in the coastal area. As an initial study of the development of maritime-based contextual science learning media, the purpose of this research is to know the extent of science process skill level, attitude toward science, and academic achievement of students in coastal area. There were 114 students of the 8th grade of four lower secondary schools in Merbau Island participated as respondents in this study. Instruments used in data collection are science process skills tests and attitude toward science questionnaires for lower secondary school students. The results showed that 8th grade lower secondary school students in Merbau Island had high attitude toward science. On the contrary, the science process skills and academic achievement of their science are relatively low.
The various barriers to learning science using online system during the Covid-19 pandemic, do not make us as a science educators, silent. One way to keep students able to carry out scientific activities is to provide scientific projects that students can work on in their own homes. The assignment can be delivered online and teachers’ feedback can also be given online using the learning management system. This study is the phase analysis of developing Module and Kits of STEM Project at Home that can be used in online science learning bay teachers and students. The results of this needs analysis phase serve as recommendations for the next stage of research. The final result of this development research is the availability of STEM at Home Project Modules and Kits that are valid and practical for students to use in learning science during the Covid-19 pandemic or New Normal era. A total of 340 respondents consisting of grade 1, 2, and 3 junior high school students in several schools in Riau Province, Indonesia, have participated in filling out the online questionnaires. This needs analysis shows that there is a great chance that STEM project-based science learning can be carried out online by students.
The Covid-19 pandemic has a significant impact on the quality of the science learning process. Online learning restricts students from directly interacting with science tools and materials. It takes effort from science educators to facilitate students in direct learning activities (hands on activity). This research is an attempt to facilitate students in learning by doing activities. In general, this study aims to provide a STEM project KIT that students can use in online-based junior high school science learning. Based on the results of the study in the analysis phase, the researcher has identified and designed three simple STEM projects that can be built as applications for the Dynamic Electricity concept. The three STEM projects are the Fruit Electric Energy Content Exploration Project, the Flood Alarm Model Making Project, and the Micro-Hydro Power Plant Model Building Project. For the purposes of these three student STEM projects, the researcher has built a KIT with stages including: tool and material selection, assembly, and expert validation. This research has produced a prototype of the Dynamic Electricity Application STEM Project KIT which is declared valid and feasible as a medium for junior secondary science learning, both for online and offline learning.
Students' understanding of concepts is a very important factor in the success of learning. But in reality, Indonesian students' conceptual understanding is still low. The factor of low understanding of students' concepts is because students are not actively involved in problem solving activities. Student involvement can be trained by using one of the communication tools in the form of interesting learning videos to get students' attention in learning activities. This research is a survey research as a first step in developing problem solving learning videos. The benefit of this research is to find out what students currently need in science learning and how much students need to develop problem solving based learning videos. The subjects used in this study were junior high school students with a sample size of 48 students selected based on a region. This needs analysis includes 4 indicators, namely a) analysis of learning problems; b) analysis of learners; c) analysis of objectives; d) analysis of settings. Based on the results of this study, information was obtained that the development of problem solving based learning videos was feasible to be developed as a science learning media to train students' conceptual understanding in the city of Pekanbaru
