We investigate the effect of a galvanizing coating on the fatigue strength of S355 structural steel. Although some results on fatigue tests of unnotched specimens are available, those on notched components are scarce. A comparison is carried out between hot-dip galvanized specimens weakened by a central hole and untreated specimens of the same geometry for two nominal load ratios R = 0 and R = −1. In total, over 60 new experimental data are summarized and analyzed in the present contribution
The Italian Railway Transportation Organization (RFI) is presently planning to replace existing traditional steel bridges with bowstring bridges designed according to high-speed requirements. This study is focused on structural types and design rules, with the aim to fulfill the current requirements on fatigue and passenger comfort. Several structural solutions have been investigated, and the dynamic behaviour of railway bowstring bridges with span length ranging from 70 to 120 m has been studied in detail. A new structural solution is proposed, with the aim to improve the performance regarding passenger comfort; the solution, named MABB (Multiple Arches Bowstring Bridge), consists of an external arch connected to two internal arches by means of the hangers.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
