Smart grid and smart city concepts are very popular, exciting and interrelated research, development and application areas in the 21 st century. Hence, these research activities have become important task from the scientific community, practitioners, and policy makers. Smart grid allows using different energy sources more effectively, reliable, and sustainable. Smart city applications makes human life easier and more comfortable, by getting economy, governance, environment, living, healthcare, energy and mobility smarter. This paper presents a systematic analysis of published literature related to smart grid and smart city studies between 2014 and 2017. 6975 papers (4340 conference proceedings, 57 book chapters, 2578 articles) have been considered in total. The papers are classified with according to their focus, research and contribution type. A systematic mapping study is performed according to this classification. Then, recent investments and future trends have discussed.
