Highlights Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a suspected obesogen. There is a link between exposure to MSG and alterations in steroid hormone levels. MSG can antagonise the androgen receptor in a dose dependent manner. The androgen receptor plays an important role in regulating metabolic homeostasis and is an emerging target for diabetes and obesity.
