Highlights  Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a suspected obesogen.  There is a link between exposure to MSG and alterations in steroid hormone levels.  MSG can antagonise the androgen receptor in a dose dependent manner.  The androgen receptor plays an important role in regulating metabolic homeostasis and is an emerging target for diabetes and obesity.
