The indolizines nucleus is an important element of many synthetic molecules with significant biological activity. An efficient methodology for the synthesis of a variety of indolizines from quinazolinone, pyridine, and chalcone via I2/FeCl3 has been described. The reaction was promoted through Zwitterion formation/cyclization/aromatization sequence, affording the desired products in moderate to very good yields. This approach is a highly efficient and convenient way to get derivatives of indolizines from readily accessible substrate under relatively mild reaction conditions.
