Effects of Eruca sativ a se ed oil on t he histol ogy of liv er and kidney in rats ABSTRACT:The objectiv e of this s tud y was to i nvestigat e the possible ameli orativ e ef fect of Eruc a sativ a s eed oil on the hist opat hol ogical struct ure of t he liv er and kidneys of mal e albino rat s. A t ot al of f ourteen r ats wer e grouped i nt o two groups of 7 rats eac h. Gr oup 1 r ats s erved as c ontrol, whil e group 2 receiv ed 2 ml/kg B .W . of Eruc a sativ a s eed oil, dail y f or f our weeks thr oug h t he or al rout e (i.g.). A significant d ecreas e ( P < 0.05) in the absolute liver w eights w as observ ed in the treated group as c ompared with the c ontrol (9.66 ± 0. 55 and 10. 00 ± 2.07, respectiv el y). Also, the abs olute kidney w eights w ere f ound significantl y decreased ( P < 0.05) aft er treatment as compar ed t o c ontr ols ( 1.70 ± 0. 09 and 2.16 ± 0. 46, resp ectivel y). In the control group, the relative liv er index (%) w as 3. 86 grams and the r elativ e kidney index (%) was 0.83 g rams. In the exp erimental group, the relative i ndexes w ere 4. 05 grams and 0. 71 grams , f or liver and kidney, resp ectiv ely. Light micr oscopic examination of indicated some histop at hol ogical chang es i n bot h studied organs . In liv er, c ong estion i n the blood v ess els and sinus oid wer e observ ed. Moreover, the obvi ous chang e in t he kidneys was conges tion. In c oncl usion, t his st ud y show s t hat dail y administr ation of Eruc a sativ a s eed oil at a dose 2 ml/kg B .W ., f or 4 week s, c ould pat hologicall y aff ect som e vit al inter nal organs , such as liver and kidneys causing alt erati ons in t heir histol ogical struct ure. S o, it is r ecomm end ed t o be us ed at low sui table d ose.
