Rural community in peatland is less concerned actor during the recurrent fire disaster. This disaster has already diminished the source of livelihoods. There is limited information about the dynamics of the livelihoods related to the use of fire in peatland. This paper examines the dynamics of rural livelihoods and the adaptation livelihoods strategies in degraded peatland. Data are collected by field survey, in-depth interview, focus group discussion in three villages at Riau Province and they are analyzed descriptively. Peatland is the only remaining important resource for the rural people after fire disaster. They will select prospective commodities based on their capabilities and access to market. Rural community are more intensive in using the resource of peatland for their livelihoods with the growing interest to several commodities. Recent community livelihoods depend on some certain commodities (palm oil, areca nut, rubber) and tend to conduct expansive and monoculture land use strategy rather than polyculture strategy. Diversification livelihood with adaptive and valuable commodities through trainings, continuous coaching and building business.

Gender roles in peatland-based communities’ livelihoods are an important factor in livelihood vulnerability due to challenging characteristics for conducting agriculture in this area. This article reports on a study of gender roles in Riau Province in 7 villages in 3 districts, aiming to identify significant attributes that determining gender equity at the household level. The data was collected through structured interviews in 221 households, in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions in every village. The research indicated that gender roles in agricultural activities are significantly dominated by men, while women play a more significant role in domestic activities. Both men and women contribute equally in the social life of the community; women’s participation and group membership is equal to men’s. Poor families tend to have higher gender equity in agricultural activities than rich households. The role of women in wealthier households is not in their physical contribution on the land but is mostly transformed into a decision making role. This indicates that women have a significant role in family livelihoods for both poor and rich families, but in different forms.
Forest degradation in buffer zone area of Kerinci Seblat National Park (KSNP) at Pesisir Selatan District reached 1.570 ha or of total forest degradation of KSNP. This condition is highly inter-related with income and socio-economic conditions of the community live in bufler zone area. One of the sources of income for the community living in the buffer zone from illegal logging. This research has to investigate income proportion generated from the forest and its inter-relation with socio-economic conditions of the community living in buffer zone. The research was conducted with both structured and unstructured interview methods. Data was analysed by descriptive analysis and multiple regression analysis. Research result showed that community income from logging activity was higher than the others. Income gained from logging activity reached to Rp. or 66,05 total income. The result of regression analysis indicated that the factors of Respondent Age and Amount of Household member, took significant influence to income generates from forest and intensity of illegal logging. Fakta tersebut diduga erat kaitannya dengan kegiatan dan kondisi sosial ekonomi masyarakat desa penyangga. Salah satu pendapatan hutan pada masyarakat desa penyangga diantaranya adalah hasil kayu dari kegiatanPenelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengkaji proporsi pendapatan dari hutan pada masyarakat desa penyangga, serta menganalisis pengaruh fakior-faktor sosial ekonomi rumah tangga terhadap pendapatan hutan. Metode penelitian yang yang digunakan adalah gabungan antara wawancara terstruktur dengan menggunakan kuesioner dan wawancara tidak terstruktur. Analisa data dilakukan secara deskriptif dan analisis regresi linear berganda. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pendapatan masyarakat dari kayu balok jauh lebih besar dibandingkan dengan pendapatan hasil hutan lainnya. Pendapatan dari hasil kayu (kayu balok) mencapai Rp 282.499,-atau 66,05% dari total pendapatan/bulan. Hasil analisis regresi berganda menunjukkan bahwa faktor Umur Responden dan Jumlah Anggota Rumah Tangga, memiliki pengaruh signifikan terhadap peningkatan dan penurunan pendapatan masyarakat dari hutan.
Peatland management cannot be separated from the involvement of men and women. Gender role in farmer’s livelihoods on peatlands are an important factor for the implementation of community livelihood strategies after the policy of prohibiting burning in land management. The research is a survey research using a qualitative approach. The research was conducted in Pulu Beruang Village and Kayu Labu Village, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency. Data collection was carried out through field observations, interviews and Focus Group Discussions conducted in each village. Research indicated that in both villages, the dominant role in agricultural activities is significant by men, while women’s role in household activities. In terms of access to natural resource management, women and men have equal opportunities. The existence of peat management policy that tends to limit men in carrying out their livelihood systems makes women play a role in earning a living. Men dominate asset ownership, but women have an important role in decision making.
