Coffee is a commodity that has high value and great demand, then it supply chain tends to be monopolized by big actors certainly for single origin coffee bean. However, increasing number of local coffee shops and consumer awareness of consumed goods, and the emergence of more conscious consumer groups of “coffee lovers” or “connoisseur’s consumers”, sparks an intesive competition among market actors in local level that influence such dominance. This study aims to employ the dynamic capabilities theories (DCs) to analyze how the market actors, namelysmall traders, wholesalers, certified companies, and coffee shop owners build a strategy to secure their coffee supply amidst the tight competition.Selecting the coffee markets in Dampit District, East Java, Indonesia, we find the actors fighting for social space to win the competition by building network, dependency, and legitimacy. Actors build capabilities based on the internal potential to identify opportunities, take the opportunities, and utilize them to transform business organizations to survive rapid environmental changes. Not just looking at dominance behaviors as how it is in the case of asset-based approach, DCs provide a more balanced perspective between the entrepreneur's capacity and asset control. Detailed research to see each actor builds long term strategies is needed in the future to describe in more detail their strategy in maintaining their business sustainability in the more competitive busisness environment.
Between agro-food products, coffee is the first commodity to quarrel in ethical attributes and sustainability issues such as fair trade, premium prices, as well as justified value chain issues. Taking into account the growing coffee consumption in Indonesia, this article tries to prove connoisseur consumers (CCs) are moderating the sustainable consumption and dynamics capabilities (DCs) of single origin coffee shops (SOCSs). An in-depth interview to 30 SOCS managers and 60 baristas and a survey to 450 consumers found that there are significant correlations between connoisseurs attributes such as the depth of a barista’s knowledge of coffee, the barista’s skills, the shop image, the coffee variation, the barista’s communication skills, and the serving techniques and that they have a relationship with an increase in the number of consumers. The existence of CCs has encouraged the practice of consumption sustainability of SOCSs and moderates SOCSs to improve sensing, seizing, and transforming shop management to stand against the competition. Based on the above findings, more in-depth research on the standard character and number of CCs is needed as well as their contribution to the revenue structure of SOCSs. Meanwhile, connoisseur customers’ support is capable of helping the SOCSs in improving their DCs to improve the sustainable consumption of Indonesian single origin coffee in the future.
The agricultural extension worker's performance is the work outputs achieved by agricultural extension workers in conducting their jobs. The aim of this research is to know the factors which influence to the agricultural extension worker's performance and the connection between the factors. Also, to know that factors influences the cacao farmers competence. The population of this research is all the agricultural extension workers in four district, South Sulawesi province (447 person). The sample of this research referred to Slovin method from among 106 (one hundred six) agricultural extension workers, 106 (one hundred six) group farmers leaders and 212 (two hundred twelve) cacao farmers. The design of this research was conducted by surveying and interviewing. LISREL program with 'SEM' was used in analyzing data. The Result of this research show that the agricultural extension worker's performance was influenced significantly by characteristic, competence, motivation and self reliance. The total influence of them were 10 percent and 90 percent were represent other influences outside this study. The suggestion was that their performance must be improved by providing special training to improve their capability in agricultural extension planning, monitoring and evaluation, agricultural extension development and technology disemination. The penetration of modern supermarkets is believed to be the cause of the declining role of traditional markets and street vendors in Indonesia. Nevertheless, the competition between state-promoted markets and traditional markets is rarely discussed, both adaptation of market institution and strategy of market actors. This research outlined a theoretical understanding of the dynamics of traditional markets, along the concepts of market flexibility as an adaptation strategy and coordination problems as market actor strategies. The researchers empirically reflect the strategies of four traditional vegetable markets that still survive from tight competition—both the market itself as a social institution, and the strategies of actors involved in market transactions. The traditional market builds flexibility by: (1) Specifying commodities, (2) segmenting customers, (3) changing market operating hour, (4) modifying transportation to operate more efficiently, and (5) low cost market management. At the actor level, competition problems are resolved by utilizing an emotional sentiment of friendship social relations; the formation of prices is determined by developing effective networks of information; and the cooperation problem is dealt with by building a system of punishment and reward based on informal mechanisms. This finding verifies the thesis stating that market competitiveness is determined by institutional flexibility against competition and the ability of market actors to build effective social interactions to maintain market sustainability. Based on the above explanation, further research needs to be focused on calculating how much efficiency is built due to market flexibility, both the transaction cost and the production cost in a quantitative manner. At the actor level, it is necessary to delineate the strategies being built, whether based on pure rational or economic and moral or non-economic considerations in solving coordination problems in the market.
