Background. Virgin coconut oil is a natural product from coconut that has many benefits such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. Inflammatory disease of the periodontal tissues has a high prevalence worldwide. The main etiology of periodontitis plaque of biofilm contains colonies of pathogenic microorganisms. The occurrence of inflammation in the periodontal tissue stimulates the release of inflammatory mediators, such as TNF-α and TGF-β. Treatment for periodontitis can be performed starting from initial therapy and usually accompanied by additional therapy such as local drug delivery. VCO can be used as an alternative to antibiotics. Objective. To determine the effectiveness of VCO gel on periodontal tissue regeneration materials through the expression of TNF-α and TGF-β1. Methods. This is an experimental laboratory with a posttest-only control group design. VCO was made from grated fresh coconut and then mixed with NaCMC to obtain gel viscosity. The subjects of this study were 30 male periodontitis-induced Wistar rats by injecting Porphyromonas gingivalis into the gingival sulcus. Wistar rats were then divided into 3 groups. On the 7th and 14th days, the rats were sacrificed and the jaw was sampled to determine the amount of TNF-α and TGF-β1 expression in the regenerative process of periodontal tissue. Result. The amount of TNF-α and TGF-β1 increased significantly in the treatment group, but not as much as the increase in the positive control and negative control groups. Conclusion. VCO gel can affect the expression of TNF-α and TGF-β1 in the regeneration process of periodontal tissue in periodontitis-induced rats.
Introduction: Malocclusion is a dental health problem that has a high prevalence rate. According to WHO, the periodic ranking is below dental caries and periodontal disease. The prevalence in Indonesia reaches 80%. Orthodontic treatment requires intensive time to control every month. This is an obstacle forcertain patients who have busy schedules and great distances from the clinic to the dentist clinic. In this context, orthodontics was invited to go forward using tele-orthodontic devices which is a term used for long-distance orthodontic treatment through information technology media, not through direct contact with individual contacts. Objective: To examine more deeply about tele-orthodontics as a solution in the treatment of malocclusion. Discussion: Dental MonitoringTM is a software-based program that enables practitioners to monitor the development of patient care remotely. Another advantage is closer management through remote monitoring, saving time, transportation costs, and increasing patient comfort. Conclusion: Tele-orthodontics can be used as a current solution to treatment for malocclusion.
Teeth dimension is the factor influenced the incidence of tooth impaction. The most related factor with teeth dimension is teeth form. This study was aimed to determine the effect of teeth form on the incidence of lower third impaction. It was carried out on Buginese and Torajanese in South Sulawesi Indonesia. The samples consist of 115 Buginese and 115 Torajanese , the age range from 20-25 years old with all natural mandibular teeth including second molar. After impression of both upper and lower teeth was taken , each tooth form was determined by measurement with trubite tooth indicator. The frequency distribution and coefficient corelation analysis test showed that there was no significant difference between teeth form and incidence of lower third molar impaction in Buginese and Torajanese as well as the sex. Generally, Buginese hare ovoid while Torajanese hare square teeth form.
Microorganisms are the main causative agents on the development of apical periodontitis. Microorganisms infecting the root canal system are colonized in communities as biofilm. These bacterial communities show distinct pattern related to the different forms of apical periodontitis which are determined by species richness and abundance. Objective: This study is aimed to examine the root canal microorganisms on upper anterior teeth of asymptomatic apical periodontitis and chronic apical abscess. Methods: Samples were collected from patients referred to Endodontic Department of Hasanuddin University Dental Hospital from July 2013 to September 2013. Twenty two samples, aged 17-40 were collected from 16 patients with asymptomatic apical periodontitis, and 36 samples, aged 18-50 were collected from 36 patients with chronic apical abscess. Microorganisms were evaluated using cultural technique. Results: The results showed predominant bacteria in asymptomatic apical periodontitis is Porphyromonas spp while in chronic apical abscess both Streptococcus spp and Porphyromonasspp showed similar frequencies. This study showed Porphyromonas spp plays dominant role in apical periodontitis either in asymptomatic apical periodontitis or chronic apical abscess. Conclusion:This study showed different composition of bacteria within different apical periodontitis and Porphyromonas spp is the most prevalent bacteria found in both asymptomatic apical periodontitis and chronic apical abscess. To determine the effect of packaged coffee drinks consumption to corrosion rate of stainless steel orthodontic wire. Material and Methods:This study is laboratory experimental with post-test only with control group design and using stainless steel orthodontic wire with total of 16 samples. The wire length is 6 cm and diameter is 0.41 mm. Samples were divided into 4 groups with 1 group of artificial saliva and 3 groups with a packaged coffee drinks substitution. Measurement of corrosion rate was done by using potensiostat tool and data analysis using SPSS version 23 and kruskal wallis and post hoc Mann whitney test with significant value of p>0.05.substitution. Measurement of corrosion rate was done by using potensiostat tool and data analysis using SPSS version 23 and kruskal wallis and post hoc Mann whitney test with significant value of p>0.05. Results: Luwak and robusta packaged coffee group had lower corrosion rate value than the control group. While arabica packaged coffee group had higher corrosion rate value than the control group. Conclusion: Arabica packaged coffee drinks had the biggest effect on corrosion rate of stainless steel orthodontic wire.
