The electrides are a peculiar class of ionic solids where the anions are replaced by electrons. The physical reasons for the stability of such an unconventional situation are explored on the basis of a self-consistent tight-binding Hartree-Fock calculation. The theoretical results are shown to provide a natural explanation for the formation of a lattice of trapped electrons. They also lead to correct predictions for the optical absorption spectrum and the Knight shift.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
