The proton linac of the European Spallation Source, under construction in Lund, Sweden, had beam commissioning of its ion source (IS) and the following low energy beam transport (LEBT) at their final locations from September 2018 to July 2019. This was first of several beam commissioning stages for the linac of ESS, towards the start of the user program in 2023. This paper presents highlights of characterizations of the IS and LEBT from the aforementioned beam commissioning period, including behavioral change of the IS against its parameters, error source identifications of the beam trajectory in the LEBT, and preliminary characterization of the LEBT output beam against solenoid strengths in LEBT.

Studies on linear and nonlinear imperfections in the SLS storage ring operated at 2.4 GeV are presented. The influence of spurious vertical dispersion and linear coupling on the vertical emittance and possible correction schemes are discussed. The deterioration of the Dynamic Aperture caused by higher order multipoles is investigated based on field calculations. Furthermore the influence of ground waves on the orbit stability is estimated.
A distributed client-server model, based on the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), has been established to interface beam dynamics applications at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) to essential software packages such as the accelerator physics package TRACY and the Common DEVice (CDEV) control library. Within this model remote clients can invoke computer intensive methods, such as beam orbit correction procedures, on a dedicated server. Access to the SLS accelerator devices is achieved through a generic C++ CDEV server.CORBA based applications have been extensively used during the commissioning of the SLS booster and storage ring. It has been demonstrated that the complex clientserver environment is manageable and reliable. The inherent flexibility and the relative "ease of use" of the established framework have justified the initial investment in its design and implementation.Beam dynamics related commissioning results are presented together with the corresponding applications.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
