Teratological forms of diatoms are non-adaptive phenotypic abnormalities caused by various environmental stresses. Heavy metal contamination and artificial growth conditions are the best known causes. In fact, the recording of abnormal cells in a diatom population or community can give both a temporal and quantitative indication of heavy metal contamination of water bodies. Moreover, long-term cultures generally present a high percentage of abnormal cells due to the scarcity of nutrients, presence of waste products and osmotic pressure. The aim of this paper is to classify and provide photographic documentation and descriptions of all known teratologies occurring in the most widespread freshwater diatom genera.
Soluble bio-based substances (SBS) isolated from municipal biowastes and a commercial Leonarditebased product were applied as substrate drench or as foliar spray to grow the ornamental hybrid Euphorbia x lomi. The SBS were found more powerful than the commercial Leonardite product in enhancing plant photosynthesis, growth and aesthetic effect, improving flower quality, and optimizing water use efficiency. Enhancement factors of plant performance indicators by SBS ranged from 1.3 to 8.6 relatively to the control plants, and from 1.2 to 4.5 relatively to plants treated with the commercial Leonardite product at equal applied dose. The environmental and economic implication of these results for agriculture, the management of urban wastes, and the chemical industry are discussed.
Inter- and intracytogenetic variability was analyzed in 13 natural Palearctic populations of Chironomus riparius Meigen 1804 (syn. Chironomus thummi) by examining hereditary and somatic aberrations (mainly inversions) of the salivary gland polytene chromosomes. In total, 77 different types of inherited inversion sequences and 184 different types of somatic inversions were found. The median percent frequency of inherited inversions was 1.4% and karyotypic divergence between populations was very low. Most hereditary inversions were endemic and always in a heterozygous state. Only six inversion sequences, each of them shared by two very distant populations, may be considered a relic of very ancient ancestral inversions. Unlike inherited inversions, occurrence of somatic aberrations seems to increase with the overall rise in the level of heavy metal pollution of the sediments from which larvae were sampled. In contrast with what occurs in populations of other chironomid species, populations of C. riparius do not seem to undergo a process of cytogenetic differentiation.

AbstractTwo urban biowaste materials, fermented under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, their soluble and insoluble alkaline hydrolysates, and a commercial biostimulant product, were compared for their capacity to boost Hibiscus crop production and quality. Plants were grown in 4-litre pots, containing peat and pumice as substrate, under optimal growing conditions. A randomized-block experimental design was adopted. Two types (main factors of variability) of treatments were applied, i.e. by blending the above products with the substrate at transplant, and by fertigation using the soluble hydrolysates only. Plant biomass characteristics and ecophysiological parameters were measured. Mean effect of factors and their interactions were assessed by two-way ANOVA. Principal component analysis was performed by using the different dependent variables to summarize the most relevant differences among treatments. Compared with the control (untreated plants), the applied treatments enhanced most of the investigated parameters. The most valuable effects were observed for total biomass accumulation (+25%), plant height (+10%), leaf chlorophyll SPAD index (+15%) and net photosynthesis (+24%). The hydrolysates performed better than the pristine materials. The former ones were comparable to the commercial biostimulant.
