Since the publication of the ''Our common future'' report (WCED 1987) and the Rio Summit in 1992, sustainable development has become the overarching political objective globally. As indicated in Chapter 36 of Agenda 21 (1992), appropriate multi and interdisciplinary education is needed. The idea of a strong shift to Education for Environment and Sustainability clearly recommends the introduction and permeation of sustainability principles in all ''sectoral educations''.Green Chemistry is a new approach of chemistry that emphasizes to prevention and reduction of chemicals negative impact. The future sustainable society will rely greatly on the supply and use of "green" chemicals to produce consumer goods. The need to incorporate the principles of Green Chemistry in education as it contributes the best to sustainability, in combination to lack of educational material which focuses on the use of renewable materials formed the basis for the preparation of this thesis. The main purpose of this dissertation was the development and implementation of original educational material for secondary education by focusing on the seventh principle of Green Chemistry concerning the use of renewable raw materials. The resulting material includes activities generally relate to renewable raw materials (definition, origin, open-closed carbon cycle, methods of bioproducts production) and activities related to bioproducts such as biofuels, biomaterialsbiochemicals (glues , plastics, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, polymers, solvents), etc. Students learn some of the basic principles of green chemistry while issues proposed to be discussed in the classroom are correlated with real-world examples enhancing thereby the purposes of education for Environment and Sustainability.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
