Maribel Álvarez holds a dual appointment as Assistant Professor in the English Department and Research Social Scientist at the Southwest Center, University of Arizona. She teaches courses on folklore and semiotics and is involved in multiple research projects to document and theorize cultural practices in Northern Mexico and the US Southwest. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Arizona and is currently writing a book on artisans who produce "Mexican curios" at the US-Mexico border.
