Although Gregory of Nyssa was familiar with the work of Philo of Alexandria and no doubt drew inspiration from him in many ways, the number of Philo's works Gregory actually knew is still not known. This article explores the possible influence of Philo's De Abrahamo on Gregory's later work De vita Moysis, an association that has yet to be examined in sufficient detail. The similarities between both works will be elucidated by means of three themes: first, the manner in which both writings combine the retelling and allegorical interpretation of a biblical text; second, the soul's insatiable pursuit of the good, by which the soul, in repeatedly reaching its limits, attains a kind of relative perfection, changing as a result; and third, the idea that the best inducement toward leading a good life is based on a desire for friendship with God.
Background: Acquired brain injury (ABI) is a disease that causes severe disability. For this reason, we established an interprofessional rehabilitation team consisting of physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and social workers operating in home settings -in an effort to minimize the consequences of long-term disability. Objectives: Evaluate the development of postural and balance functions (over a 9-month period) in 17 clients with ABI undergoing individualized 3-month physiotherapy in the home setting. Methods: Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Timed Up and Go test (TUG) were used to quantify the functional status of the clients. A total of 4 assessments were completed at the initial, 3 months, 6 months, and final 9-months examinations. Results: According to BBS and TUG, 15 clients showed an improvement in their balance functions after the intervention; 2 clients were unable to complete the TUG, and 6 clients remained at risk of falling. Conclusions: Our results showed a clear benefit of the physiotherapeutic intervention. However, 6 months after completion, one-third of the clients had worse results on the TUG; although 15 clients continued to improve according to the BBS. This indicates the higher sensitivity of the TUG test for evaluating balance functions, and that physiotherapeutic interventions should be prolonged, particularly in clients with a Functional Independence Measure instrument (FIM) of less than 6 points.
Objectives: Demographic differentiation caused by the history of migration in the Czech and Slovak Republics led the authors of this article to analyse generational differences in the groups of foreigners living in the Czech Republic (CR) and the impact of generational differences on selected aspects of their social situation and perceived health. The crucial research question was whether and to what degree do different generations of foreigners vary from each other and what impact this has had on their social situation and health determinants. Methods: The main goal was to examine mutual relationships between selected characteristics of social situation and health determinants in various groups of foreigners living in the CR. A total of 1,003 questionnaires among foreigners officially living in the Czech Republic were collected and analysed. In the area of subjective perception of health, a comparison of foreigners with Czech citizens (representative sample of Czech seniors; 1,172 respondents) in the age category 65+ was made in order to find out whether this perception differs between senior foreign nationals and senior Czechs. Results: Older individuals (50-64 years and 65+ years) appeared to have the best integration into Czech society. This age generation felt positive about stay and migration status in the CR. Older foreigners differ from older Czech citizens who tend to refer to their health as very good to rather good compared to foreigners who described their health as neither good nor bad. The middle generation (30-49 years) of foreigners was characterized by hard work and the initial stages of integration into Czech society. This group also reported positive feelings about living in the CR relative to their home country. Conclusion:The oldest generation of foreigners is the best integrated in the Czech Republic (with regard to selected aspects tested in this article). This generation is able to offer new immigrant effective integration strategies. However, they assess their subjective health one degree worse in comparison with Czech seniors (representative sample), this finding should lead to the setting of preventive programmes related to a healthy lifestyle, including lifestyle for foreigners living in the Czech Republic.
