This paper reports a method of manipulating surface plasmon resonance (SPR) by mechanically straining a substrate to induce reconfigurations of photonic nanostructures patterned above the substrate with handling simplicity, operation practicality, application variety, and design flexibility. Results indicate that the proposed method linearly expands nanostructures in the xy-plane, switching SPR and consequently changing the perceived color. Comprehensive structural design, numerical evaluation, device fabrication, experimental verification, and optical analysis were conducted in this study. In addition to the demonstrations, a tendency toward color purity improvement along with the enhancement of the completeness of linear strain distribution was observed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
