In Serbia irrigation is not widely utilized to reduce water scarcity in crop production. Therefore, wheat yields largely depend on weather factors. Over the past two decades, there has been recorded a significant change in weather conditions in Serbia. Such change produces concerns about Serbia's food security and exports since wheat is among the most important agricultural products. In this paper authors analyze and quantify the impact of weather factors on the achieved wheat yields, using a set of panel data on selected Serbian municipalities in fourteen years (2000-2013). The multidimensional regression was conducted as a sort of quasi-experiment, combining data on achieved yields in selected municipalities, with data on weather factors: temperature, precipitation, extraterrestrial radiation, and evapotranspiration. Utilizing the Hargreaves method of determining reference evapotranspiration, average daily water deficit was computed as a single representative indicator of weather conditions. Testing was conducted on four predefined sub-periods within the vegetation season of wheat, and the impact of average daily water deficit on wheat yields was estimated for each of these sub-periods. Results show a robust, statistically significant impact of change in average daily water deficit on decreased wheat yields. Growth of water deficit by 0.1 mm, in the period November 15th to April 1st results with 175 kg/ha lower yields, while in the period April 1st to May 15th results in 45 kg/ha lower yields. Impact shows to be conditional on the altitude, rapidly losing on intensity and significance above 100 m.
The aim of this paper is to determine the economic viability of the electronic warehouse receipt registry introduction, as a step toward electronic warehouse receipts. Both forms of warehouse receipt paper and electronic exist in practice, but paper warehouse receipts are more widespread. In this paper, the dematerialization process is analysed in two steps. The first step is the dematerialization of warehouse receipt registry, with warehouse receipts still in paper form. The second step is the introduction of electronic warehouse receipts themselves. Dematerialization of warehouse receipts is more complex than that for financial securities, because of the individual characteristics of each warehouse receipt. As a consequence, electronic warehouse receipts are in place for only to a handful of commodities, namely cotton and a few grains. Nevertheless, the movement towards the electronic warehouse receipt, which began several decades ago with financial securities, is now taking hold in the agricultural sector. In this paper is analysed Serbian electronic registry, since the Serbia is first country in EU with electronic warehouse receipts registry donated by FAO. Performed analysis shows the considerable impact of electronic warehouse receipts registry establishment on enhancing the security of the system of public warehouses, and on advancing the trade with warehouse receipt.
Fruit production has important role in development of the Serbian agriculture. Within the structure of grown fruits, apple takes remarkable share. As a fruit species suitable for processing and longer storage, apple is traditionally use in households as fresh or processed. One of the alternatives for apple processing that could be a good solution for small family agricultural holdings represents the production of apple chips. Implementation of mentioned processing is suitable as from the aspect of size of needed investments and relatively simple technological requirements, as well as towards the quit a short period of return on invested assets, or possibility to engage installed equipment and farm members out of apple processing campaign. On the other hand, apple processing would certainly ensure the creation of added value and continuity of the farm income, what would primarily have a positive effect on farm sustainability. The main goal of paper is to consider the power of contribution margin obtained in apple chips production at farm level. Research involves one production cycle (three-month campaign), where presented data and results are referring to 2018. According to gained results, derives a conclusion that processing of apples into the apple chips could be a good alternative for small farms concerning the creation of its additional income.
Water is the source of life for all living beings, but also an irreplaceable input in agricultural production. According to the available water and land potentials in Serbia irrigation is used at generally negligible arable areas. Although it represents an agro-technical measure whose implementation usually causes significant investment costs for the farm, its application ensures high and stable yields of high quality crops' fruits, while indirectly it affects increase in incomes and continuity in farm sustainability. The main goal of the paper is presenting an assessment of the effects of investing in implementation of the irrigation system (type Tifon) on a small family farm primarily active in crop farming. Investment analysis was based on basic static and dynamic methods for assessing the effectiveness of investments. The assessment was focused to two modalities in crop production, i.e. implementation of irrigation in crop farming at 25 ha and 30 ha. In both observed modalities the investment was assessed as economically justified alternative for farm business improvement, while there are shown slightly better results with the rise of used agricultural surfaces.
