Aspects of the feeding ecology of a small characin, Astyanax paranae, were studied during 1996/1997 and 1998/1999 in the Alagados Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil (25º01'50.0'' S; 050º03'41.9'' W). Fishes were quarterly captured from the reservoir's riverine and lacustrine zones and stomachs contents of 711 adult individuals were analyzed by volumetric method. Species' feeding spectrum and spatial, temporal and sexual variations on diet were evaluated. Data matrix was summarized by detrented correspondence analysis (DCA) and the axes scores from DCA were used as variables in one-way ANOVA of null models to test diet variations. Astyanax paranae fed on detritus/sediment, plant matter, algae and aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. The timespace prevalence of detritus/sediment and plant matter on diet characterized the feeding habit as detritivorous tending to herbivory. Significant differences on food items proportions occurred between the sampling months and sampling sites and were related to resources availability, characterizing the species trophic opportunism.Aspectos da ecologia alimentar de um pequeno caracídeo, Astyanax paranae, foram estudados durante 1996/1997 e 1998/1999 no reservatório de Alagados, Paraná, Brasil (25º01'50,0'' S; 50º03'41,9'' W). Os peixes foram capturados trimestralmente nas zonas fluvial e lacustre do reservatório e os conteúdos gástricos de 711 espécimes adultos foram analisados através do método volumétrico. Foram avaliados o espectro alimentar da espécie e alterações espaciais, temporais e entre os sexos na dieta. A matriz de dados foi sumarizada através da análise de correspondência com remoção do efeito do arco (DCA) e os escores dos eixos resultantes da DCA utilizados como variáveis em análises de variância (ANOVA) unifatoriais de modelos nulos para testar diferenças na dieta. Astyanax paranae consumiu detrito/sedimento, vegetais, algas e invertebrados aquáticos e terrestres. O predomínio espaço-temporal de detrito/sedimento e vegetais na dieta indicou hábito alimentar detritívoro com tendência a herbivoria. Diferenças significativas na proporção dos itens alimentares ocorreram entre os meses e locais amostrados, tendo sido relacionadas à disponibilidade dos recursos, caracterizando o oportunismo trófico da espécie.
ABSTRACT. This study aimed to locate, describe and characterize the esophagus, stomach and intestine of Satanoperca pappaterra using histological techniques. The species presents detritivore-invertivore feeding habit and is widely distributed in Neotropical continental waters. The esophagus is short, the stomach is small with saccular form and the intestine is long. The histological sections were stained using hematoxylin/eosin and Periodic Acid Schiff. Throughout the digestive tract, the gastric wall is composed by four different tunicae: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa and serosa, besides distinct intrinsic innervation represented by the submucosal and myenteric ganglionated plexuses. Depending on the organ, several characteristics were peculiar such as the external muscle layer of the esophagus that permeates the submucosa; a single sphincter between the stomach and intestine; stomach without differentiated regions; intestine histologically and physiologically divided into two regions (proximal and distal), considering the villi height and spacing besides the density of the goblet cells.Keywords: freshwater fish, Cichlidae, histological methods, digestive tract. Este estudo teve por objetivo localizar, delimitar e caracterizar histologicamente o esôfago, estômago e intestino de Satanoperca pappaterra. A espécie possui hábito alimentar detritívoro-invertívoro e é amplamente distribuída em águas continentais neotropicais. Macroscopicamente, o esôfago é curto, o estômago é pequeno e com formato sacular e o intestino é longo. Os cortes histológicos foram corados com hematoxilina/eosina e ácido periódico de Schiff. Ao longo de todo o tubo digestório, nota-se quatro túnicas distintas compondo a parede: mucosa, submucosa, muscular externa e serosa e distinta inervação intrínseca representada pelos plexos ganglionados submucoso e miontérico. Dependendo do órgão ficaram evidentes características peculiares, tais como, a muscular externa do esôfago que permeia a submucosa; um único esfíncter entre o estômago e o intestino; estômago sem regiões diferenciadas; intestino dividido histológica e fisiologicamente em duas porções (proximal e distal), considerando a altura e espaçamento das vilosidades e a densidade das células caliciformes.Palavras chaves: peixe de água doce, Cichlidae, método histológico, tubo digestório.
We evaluated the factors that affect the food resource use by Plagioscion ternetzi using three approaches: spatial, seasonal, and ontogenetic changes. Fish were sampled between March 2000 and February 2001 and March 2003 and February 2004 in the Sinhá Mariana and Chacororé lagoons, wetlands of the Pantanal Matogrossense. Fish was the predominant food in the diet, but shrimps and insects have been also consumed. The diet of P. ternetzi was significantly different between lagoons, but no difference was detected between dry and flood periods. In Sinhá Mariana lagoon, the diet mainly consisted of Psectrogaster curviventris, in both periods. In the flood period in Chacororé lagoon, fish was the dominant food (especially Astyanax spp., Leporinus spp. and Schizodon borellii), and in dry, shrimp and Eigenmannia spp. The Spearman coefficient indicated no correlation between the abundance of caught fish species and their abundances in the diet of P. ternetzi in Sinhá Mariana lagoon, and a strong negative correlation at Chacororé lagoon, although some very consumed preys were numerically abundant in the environment. Despite the intake of insect and shrimp, P. ternetzi was piscivorous since immature stages. A correlation between each item and the size classes of P. ternetzi was tested by means of Pearson correlation that showed that the changes in the use of resources over ontogenetic development have been represented by increased intake of P. curviventris in Mariana lagoon, and S. borellii at Chacororé lagoon, accompanying the increase in the size of the predator. In this way, the results suggest that several factors can be involved in the use of food resources by P. ternezi, among them the abundance, the size and morphological characteristics of the prey. Na lagoa Mariana, Psectrogaster curviventris foi a presa mais consumida em ambos os períodos. Na lagoa Chacororé, peixes dominaram a dieta (principalmente Astyanax spp., Leporinus spp. and Schizodon borellii) na cheia, e camarão e Eigenmannia spp. na seca. Uma correlação de Spearman mostrou que não existe correlação entre a abundância das espécies de peixes capturadas e suas abundâncias na dieta de P. ternetzi na lagoa Mariana, e que há uma correlação negativa na lagoa Chacororé, embora algumas presas importantes na dieta tenham sido numericamente importantes nas capturas. Embora tenha consumido camarões e insetos, P. ternetzi foi piscívora desde imatura.
