Behviorul family systems therapy (BFST) is an approach to child, adolescent, and family problems that blends behavior modification, cognitive therapy, and family systems therapy. It is a short-term, action-oriented therapy that conceptualizes clinical presenting problems within a family systems context, takes into account contemporary knowledge about child and adolescent development, and relies on empirically tested behavioral and cognitive techniques to produce change. It is based on the premise that we will fail clinically a certain percentage of times unless we not only change behavior and address cognitions and feelings but do so by taking into account the hierarchy within the family and the child's developmental level. It also embraces a strong commitment to empiricism, specificity, and teachability; not only must interventions pass the test of rigorous clinical outcome trials, but they also must be suitable for teaching to other professionals and for replicating through written manuals, videotapes, and professional development workshops.
