Head Start programs provide two meals: AM= Breakfast (B) and Lunch (L); PM= L and Snack (S). Two surveys were conducted 6 months apart (C1: n=62; C2: n=53). B, L and S sample portions and plate waste for each child was weighed for three separate days each collection; samples and meal plates were photographed before and after eating for comparison. Characteristics: 58% female; 50% Caucasian, 31% African‐American, 16% Hispanic; 3% Asian; age 59 months; height 108 cm; weight 19 kg; BMI 16.4: 3% underweight, 61% normal, 21% at risk of overweight, 15% overweight. Plate waste for vegetables (63%) and entrees (52%) was high; fruit (49%), meat (46%), grain (43%) and dairy (41%) waste was less (P<0.05). Children were offered Kcals and protein (g): B= 260 and 9; L= 358 and 18; S= 139 and 4; they consumed: B 141 and 5; AM‐L 244 and 12; PM‐L 188 and 9; and S 123 and 3, respectively. PM group L macronutrient intake was lower than AM group and S was wasted the least (P<0.05). AM and PM preschoolers, respectively, consumed 28% and 22% of Kcals and 90% and 63% protein of their daily requirement. Presentation, appetite and portion size may contribute to high plate waste.
