The process of peripheralisation of outlying areas is discussed in this article using a case study of West Pomeranian (Zachodniopomorskie) Voivodeship in Poland. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between these peripheral areas and metropolitan core areas. Scalar and vector data on selected indicators in the years 2005 and 2015 for gminas (communes, territorial units NUTS 5) are presented. The values for both years were observed as well as the change between them. A composite indicator based on the calculated data was developed, and it served as the basis for categorisation of metropolitan, ‘semi-peripheral’ and peripheral areas, which were further defined on the basis of their intrinsic properties and location in the region. The development of such peripheral areas is assessed more generally in the conclusions.
Although the Baltic states, comprising Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, situated on the historical boundary of Northern, Central and Eastern Europe, are very similar from the viewpoint of regional identity and development as well as history and geographical characteristics, they exhibit regional disparities. This analysis focuses on monitoring a statistical set of ten selected representative economic and social indicators at the level of the NUTS 3 regions using deviations from the median and cluster method. Based on the analysis, the regions were categorized into groups that have shown the major disparities and differences between the capitals’ regions and the rest of the countries.
The paper focuses on the territorial differentiation of socioeconomic development of Poland between the years 2002-2014 and on geographic patterns of this differentiation according to the subregions ('podregiony' in Polish, NUTS 3 level). Eight partial indicators entering the composite indicator and also the average base index are applied. The analysis of the socioeconomic development of the subregions along the directional east-west gradient, rural-urban concentric gradients (around big cities) and the zones of subregions along the border of Poland with the surrounding countries are used to explain the observed differentiation. Polish subregions have undergone considerable development between 2002 and 2014, but the territorial differentiation of their development has changed only partially. The big Polish cities and also their suburban subregions have the best position of all; the worst are still the rural subregions of eastern Poland and the inner peripheries of Poland. The directional east-west gradient, the rural-urban concentric gradients, as well as the higher development of subregions at German, Czech and sea borders were confirmed.

Ing Hustopeče 17.-19. 6. 2015 18 ÚVOD Vážení regionalisté, právě otevíráte sborník příspěvků z každoročně konaného setkání výzkumníků, akademiků, praktiků, úředníků a dalších odborníků zabývajících se tématy, jejichž společným jmenovatelem je regionální problematika. Jednotlivé texty autorů z Česka, Slovenska a Polska reprezentují širokou paletu přístupů ke zkoumání procesů a jevů v území a nabízejí rozličné metodické přístupy k jejich analýze a způsobu řešení. Popřejme si tedy navzájem spoustu dalších plodných počinů, zajímavých projektů a chuti prezentovat své ...
In this article, we study regional development trends in the Czech region of West Bohemia through the application of the core-periphery concept. In particular, we focus on the peripheral areas of West Bohemia, the development and differences between its core and periphery, and on the processes of peripheralization. We have used both 'scalar' and 'vector' indicators in the hierarchical cluster analysis. It revealed selective convergent and divergent trends of the core and periphery, in which the peripheralization takes place through the geographic expansion of existing peripheries rather than through the emergence of new isolated peripheries.
