Influenza virus remains a constant public health threat, owing to its ability to evade immune surveillance through rapid genetic drift and reassortment. Monoclonal antibody (mAb)-based immunotherapy is a promising strategy for disease control. Here we use a human Ab phage display library and H5 hemagglutinin (HA) ectodomain to select ten neutralizing mAbs (nAbs) with a remarkably broad range among Group 1 influenza viruses, including the H5N1 “bird flu” and the H1N1 “Spanish flu” strains. Notably, nine of the Abs utilize the same germline gene, VH1-69. The crystal structure of one mAb bound to H5N1 HA reveals that only the heavy chain inserts into a highly conserved pocket in the HA stem, inhibiting the conformational changes required for membrane fusion. Our studies indicate that nAbs targeting this pocket could provide broad protection against both seasonal and pandemic influenza A infections.
SummaryObjective: to assess the frequency of De Quervain's tenosynovitis and its association with SMS texting. Method: a cross-sectional survey was conducted among undergraduate students studying in different physical therapy schools of Karachi belonging to both public and private sectors. Sample size was 300 students which were selected through convenience sampling. Data was collected through self-administered questionnaire and severity of the pain was assessed through Universal Pain Assessment Tool and De Quervain's tenosynovitis was diagnosed through Finkelstein test. Data entry and analysis were done using computer software SPSS version 20. Frequency and percentages were taken for categorical variable. Chi-square was applied to determine association between different variables and Finkelstein test. P value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: male/female ratio was 1:4. Regarding the use of cell phones, majority 165 (55%) were using regular cell phones, another 89 (30%) were using touch screen and 38 (13%) were using QWERTY key pads. Almost half of the students were frequently using cell phones for texting, out of them 132 (44%) texted less than 50 messages per day. Another 96 (32%) did texting between 50-100 texts. Out of 300 students who filled the questionnaire 125 (42%) students were experiencing pain in the thumb/wrist. Finkelstein test when done on students almost half (n=149) showed positive results. It was noted that as frequency of mobile phone usage increased progressively more and more people showed positive Finkelstein Test (p value 0.000). Conclusion: the result of the study concluded that almost half of the students use their mobile phones for texting more than 50 S.M.S per day and because of their mobile key pads and high speed of texting they experienced pain and weakness over the base of the thumb/wrist which shows the De Quervain's positive in that students and there is a positive association between the thumb pain and frequent text messaging.
In different health care settings, such as patients from emergency surgery, rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 is needed. The QuantuMDx Q-POC is an automatized fast workflow platform based on detection of three genes: two genes encoding structural proteins that can be used to differentiate SARS-CoV-2 from other coronavirus and a third target gene encoding a nonstructural region that is unique for SARS-CoV-2 such as the open reading frame ( ORF1 ).
Children are considered highly susceptible due to their exposure to the environmental pollutants from the toys, playing dough and paint colors. Despite of graving nature of problem, few studies are conducted on the associated risk factors and environmental pollutants. The current review put an effort on exploration the studies of environmental pollutants in children play products and its related effects on children’s health. The methods of pollutant’s detection were also discussed. The studies covered showed environmental toxicants including a wide range of heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, nonaromatic hydrocarbons, and Bisphenol A and flame retardants. Few studies has reported Chromium (555±144mg/kg) in Chinese-manufactured play dough, Cadmium (10±1.4 mg/kg) in the toy paints of China, and lead (293.8±184.5 mg/kg) in the toy paint of USA. Therefore, a dire need of research and strong legislation is needed to create awareness to protect the health of children. Keywords: Exposure, environmental pollutants, health effects, risk factors
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
